ALERT - FISHERY

Sanipes issues preventive measures in fishing and aquaculture infrastructures to face COVID-19

The Ministry of Production (Produce), through the National Fisheries Health Agency (Sanipes), issued a guide with preventive measures to be implemented by operators of fishing and aquaculture infrastructures during the exercise of their activities against the expansion of COVID -19.

“The Guide for the establishment, implementation and strengthening of preventive measures in fishing and aquaculture infrastructures to face the spread of COVID-19, aims to increase biosecurity measures and establish labor practices that protect the fishing and aquaculture sector, and that are aimed at the consumer”, said Johnny Marchán Peña, executive president of Sanipes.

The document also seeks to respond to the development of the aforementioned activities by guaranteeing the supply of fishery and aquaculture resources and products during the state of national emergency. Likewise, these provisions could also be applied by municipalities at fishing terminals and supply centers or markets where these products are sold.

Regarding general measures, it is defined, for example, that the fishing infrastructures must operate with the minimum necessary personnel, without compromising the workers considered within the vulnerable population.

Regarding specific measures, it points out that disinfection points and frequency must be increased in processing areas, workshops, transit areas, among others. Also, temperature taking, work distancing and training of personnel must be implemented, mainly.

The guidelines extend to the identification of suspected cases of contagion on personnel, report to the Ministry of Health; and for confirmed cases, report to Sanipes.

The complete guide is available on the institution’s website (https://bit.ly/2UJkMHJ) for free download for all fishing and aquaculture infrastructure operators, workers, suppliers and users of the production and commercial chain.
