Law for the Promotion of Green Hydrogen is enacted
On March 23, 2024, Law No. 31992 was published in the official gazette El Peruano, whereby all activities related to green hydrogen, from its research and development to its application, are declared of national interest.
- Definition: Green hydrogen is a clean and renewable energy resource, produced with low greenhouse gas emission technologies.
- Uses: MINEM promotes the use of green hydrogen as:
Energy vector
Fuel
Input in industrial processes, as hydrogen or by-products.
- What is being promoted? The diversification of the country’s energy resources is promoted and priority is given to projects that:
Benefit the development of national industry;
Generate jobs; and,
Attract technological specialists and innovators.
- How is it promoted? Through alliances with the private sector, generating collaborations between the private sector, universities and the different levels of government.
- Policy and Planning: Sectoral energy policies and plans are formulated for the development of the green hydrogen value chain. These guarantee, among other things
Establishment of short, medium and long term goals;
Generate regulatory and promotional alternatives that encourage and make viable the development of projects related to green hydrogen;
Granting economic and tax benefits for activities related to green hydrogen.
- Certification of green origin: MINEM will establish the requirements for obtaining the Certification in the Regulations of the Law. The Executive Power has until September 20, 2024 to issue it.
