Francisco Tong is head of our Environment practice group and leads the Mining and Natural Resources practice groups. He specializes in mining, environmental and natural resources law with more than 27 years of experience in such matters.
Chambers and Partners and other publications such as Who’s Who Legal, Legal 500, among others, consider Francisco Tong as one of the best ranked lawyers in the country. In this capacity, he has participated in the development and implementation of the main mining and infrastructure projects in the country.
Francisco counsels on environmental and natural resources protection, concessions, administrative and judicial procedures related said matters. He has extensive experience in managing permits, licenses and authorizations for the use and/or exploitation of natural resources. He also counsels on the analysis and structuring of operations related to concessions such as transfer, assignment, option and joint venture contracts.
His experience includes wide knowledge of environmental sustainability issues, such as those related to circular economy, waste management, environmental quality standards, recycling, climate change, among others.
Francisco has counseled the World Bank on projects for the improvement of mining and environmental regulations in Peru, the Dominican Republic and the Republic of Colombia. In addition, he has participated as a consultant for the German Cooperation Agency – GIZ, in projects of the Ministry of Culture on the Prior Consultation of Convention 169, and for the evaluation of the IRMA Mining Standard.
He has been a professor of Mining and Environmental Law at the top universities of the country, and president of the National Institute of Mining, Oil and Energy Law. Author of numerous articles on mining and environmental issues, contributor to several collective works in his areas of expertise and frequent speaker at both national and international conferences.
