José Tam specializes in sponsoring civil and commercial litigation, and national and international arbitration. 

He is the honorary president of the Peruvian chapter of the Spanish and Ibero-American Arbitration Club. He served as president of the Peruvian Chinese Chamber of Commerce from 2012. He currently serves as vice president and technical secretary of the Peruvian Chinese Business Council. He is also a director of the Asociación Peruanos Unidos por la Comida y la Alimentación (PUCA), a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting Peruvian gastronomy.

José is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Center for China and Asia Pacific Studies at the Universidad del Pacífico (UP), as well as the Advisory Committee of the International Commercial Dispute Prevention and Settlement Organization (ICDPASO), a non-governmental organization based in Beijing, China, created to promote various dispute resolution mechanisms globally. Since 2024, he has been a member of the advisory board of the Association for Good Judicial Practices (APB). He represents Peru as a delegate to the Arbitration and ADR Commission of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and is Co-Chair of the Women Way in Arbitration Integration Group.

Likewise, he belongs to the lists of arbitrators of the Arbitration Center of the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL), the Center for Analysis and Conflict Resolution of the Pontifica Universidad Católica del Perú (CARC PUCP), and the International Arbitration Center of the American Chamber of Commerce of Peru (AmCham Peru).

José is a lecturer and author of articles and papers on his specialty. He is the author of the book Proceso, poder jurisdiccional y tutela procesal efectiva (ARA Editores, 2009). 

Several publications such as Chambers & Partners, Legal 500 and Leaders League recognize him as one of the best lawyers in Litigation and Arbitration, and he has been highlighted as a Thought Leader in Arbitration by Lexology Index.
