Legislative Resolution No. 32591: Approval of the Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources, and Associated Traditional Knowledge

On May 13, 2026, Official Gazette El Peruano published Legislative Resolution No. 32591, whereby the Congress of the Republic approved the Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge, adopted in Geneva, Swiss Confederation, on May 24, 2024..

The purpose of the Treaty is to establish an international framework on intellectual property related to genetic resources and the traditional knowledge associated with such resources.

The Legislative Resolution approves the Treaty with a declaration made by the Republic of Peru regarding paragraph 4 of Article 15. In particular, Peru declares that it will promptly initiate its respective internal procedures to accept the amendments to the Treaty adopted by the Assembly before they enter into force.

This instrument is relevant because it strengthens the connection between intellectual property, biodiversity, and traditional knowledge, matters that are particularly sensitive for megadiverse countries such as Peru.
